Telangana CM Calls for Special Parliament Session to Pass Women's Reservation Bill

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has urged the Centre to convene a special session of Parliament to facilitate the passage of legislation guaranteeing 33 per cent reservation for women in legislative assemblies and bodies.

The appeal came on Thursday, as Revanth Reddy paid respects to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on the anniversary of his death at the State Secretariat. The Chief Minister emphasized that the INDIA alliance coalition stands prepared to back the women's reservation measure when it comes before Parliament, while cautioning the Union government against turning the proposal into a political matter.

Revanth Reddy drew a connection between the proposed legislation and Rajiv Gandhi's legacy of advancing women's participation in governance. He noted that Gandhi had established quota systems for women in local government bodies as part of his broader initiative to strengthen women's political engagement. The Chief Minister also credited Rajiv Gandhi with spearheading India's technological advancement and steering the nation toward development through economic liberalization policies.

"Our People's government remains committed to Rajiv Gandhi's vision of empowering women," Revanth Reddy stated, underscoring his administration's dedication to the former Prime Minister's ideals.

In his remarks, Revanth Reddy also referenced Sonia Gandhi's instrumental role in securing statehood for Telangana, describing the bond between the Gandhi family and Telangana's people as transcending typical political relationships. He asserted that the legacy of the Gandhi family would endure as long as Telangana exists.
