Hyderabad Mother Arrested in Daughter's Death; Police Allege Murder to Pursue Relationship

A disturbing case has emerged from Hyderabad's Old Alwal neighbourhood, where authorities have taken a woman into custody following the death of her young daughter. Investigators allege the mother drowned her six-year-old child in a water tank at her residence and subsequently staged the incident as a disappearance.

The accused, identified as Rekha, a resident of Old Alwal, had concealed her pregnancy before marrying a man named Raju. Upon discovering her condition, Raju abandoned the marriage shortly thereafter, according to police statements.

Rekha subsequently gave birth to the girl and moved in with her parents. During this period, she began an extramarital relationship with Sai, an employee at a local grocery shop. The couple expressed intentions to marry, but Sai's family objected, citing the existence of Rekha's daughter, Tanvika, then aged six.

Police claim Rekha viewed her child as an impediment to her marriage prospects. Investigators allege that she placed the girl into a water tank at her home during a moment when others were absent, then sealed the tank with its lid before filling it with water.

Following the alleged act, Rekha informed neighbours and family members that her daughter had disappeared. Her sister, Swetha, subsequently approached police and registered a formal complaint.

Authorities reviewed surveillance footage from the vicinity and observed the accused ascending to the terrace with the child, then returning alone. During police interrogation, Rekha reportedly admitted to the crime, stating she had committed the act to facilitate her marriage to her lover.

A case has been registered against the accused, who remains in police custody.
