Kolkata's political terrain underwent a dramatic transformation in May 2026 when the Trinamool Congress government, which had governed the state for 15 years, was replaced by a BJP administration. The change has energized business leaders and entrepreneurs who had previously hesitated to invest in the region.

During Mamata Banerjee's tenure, business development initiatives stagnated despite her dramatic entry into state politics through the Tata Nano controversy, which toppled a Left Front government that had ruled for approximately 35 years. Now, with Subendu Adhikari leading the new BJP government and central schemes gradually being rolled out, fresh momentum is building across sectors.

Amid this political realignment, sources indicate that Kuldeep Maity, managing director and CEO of VFS Capital in Kolkata, is being positioned to join the Bharatiya Janata Party. According to informed sources, Maity could formally accept BJP membership in the presence of either party national president Nitin Gadari or Union Minister Amit Shah. The move reflects a broader pattern where prominent leaders across sectors are aligning with the BJP's organizational structure and governance agenda.

Maity's interest in joining the party stems from a vision of revitalizing Kolkata's historical status as a major commercial hub and contributing to national and regional development, sources suggest.

Profile of a Social Entrepreneur

Kuldeep Maity stands behind VFS Capital, eastern India's largest microfinance institution. As managing director and chief executive officer, he has been instrumental in establishing the organization as the region's number one microfinance company. Beyond his corporate role, Maity serves as a board member of Sa-Dhan, assistant secretary of Village Welfare Society, and founding member of the West Bengal Micro Finance Institutions Association.

His educational credentials include a doctorate degree alongside dual master's degrees in business administration and the social sector. Over the past two decades, Maity has dedicated himself to providing economic empowerment to India's economically weaker sections, with particular focus on women.

Institutional Growth and Expansion

Under Maity's leadership, VFS Capital has expanded significantly. The institution now operates approximately 280 branches across 14 states, serving over 400,000 women borrowers. The organization has plans to open 50 additional branches this year.

Following the pandemic, VFS Capital has diversified its portfolio to include affordable housing loans and MSME lending. The company was among 72 organizations that applied for a small finance bank license, with Maity believing that bank status would enable the institution to offer deposit facilities to 92 percent of its customer base.

The institution maintains a capital adequacy ratio of 24.17 percent and carries an 'A minus' rating under the MFI(I) grade category. Originally established as Village Financial Services Limited, the organization is headquartered in Kolkata.

Recognition and Mission

Throughout his career, Maity has received numerous awards acknowledging his professional achievements and leadership. His fundamental objective remains consistent: alleviating poverty by providing financial solutions to marginalized populations, particularly women, thereby enabling them to achieve economic independence. The mission that guides VFS Capital under his stewardship continues to be bringing prosperity and opportunity to those historically excluded from formal financial systems.
