Wadhwani and Gates Foundations Join Forces to Expand India's Innovation Ecosystem

Chennai — Two major philanthropic organizations have joined forces to accelerate India's capacity for turning research breakthroughs into market-ready solutions. The Wadhwani Foundation and Gates Foundation have entered into a partnership agreement aimed at strengthening the country's innovation infrastructure through an expanded national platform.

The collaboration centers on the National Innovation Network (NIN), a nationwide expansion of the Wadhwani Innovation Network (WIN). The partnership will prioritize translational research and entrepreneurial ventures in sectors with significant societal benefit, spanning health, nutrition, biotechnology, genomics, medical technology, and other fields aligned with India's development agenda.

Under the agreement, the Gates Foundation will provide financial backing for five Centres of Excellence within the NIN framework over the next five years, with the first two facilities launching in the current year. These supported centres will enable researchers to move innovations forward from laboratory-stage development (TRL-4+) through to commercial deployment, encompassing proof-of-concept work, prototype development, testing, pilot programs, intellectual property support, commercialization guidance, startup formation, and ties to industry partners.

The WIN initiative, unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 29, 2025, was created by the Wadhwani Foundation to connect academic institutions, commercial enterprises, and sources of capital, thereby shortening the journey from research discovery to market entry. The organization has since nurtured more than 50 promising ventures in healthtech, medical devices, biotechnology, and quantum computing fields. WIN operates Centres of Excellence at premier institutions including IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Hyderabad, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, the Indian Institute of Science, and C-CAMP. Two additional specialized hubs in development are the Wadhwani School of AI & Intelligent Systems at IIT Kanpur and the Wadhwani Health & Bio Hub at IIT Bombay.

The National Innovation Network broadens this model into a comprehensive ecosystem that brings together government bodies, philanthropic organizations, corporate social responsibility programs, private companies, and institutional stakeholders to advance translational research using unified operational and governance structures.

Dr. Ajay Kela, Chief Executive Officer and Board Member of the Wadhwani Foundation, characterized the partnership as a validation of India's untapped innovation capacity. "When researchers, academic institutions, industry, and investment sources unite around a common purpose, India's innovation potential becomes tangible," he stated. "NIN presents the possibility to make innovation accessible throughout India and establish the nation as a significant player in global innovation. This will enable more institutions, scholars, and business founders to transform discoveries into products, enterprises, and meaningful change. The partnership with the Gates Foundation, recognized for its contributions to healthcare innovation, is particularly valuable as we pursue innovation-centered approaches in areas vital to India's advancement."

Ms. Archna Vyas, who leads the Gates Foundation's India operations, emphasized the significance of research originating from Indian institutions. "The coming decade will see major advances in health and nutrition emerging from India's research community," she noted. "Our work with the Wadhwani Foundation aims to nurture these possibilities by strengthening the pathways that allow India's researchers and innovators to move discoveries from the research phase to real-world implementation. This reflects a fundamental commitment of the Gates Foundation in India: empowering Indian researchers and business leaders to transform scientific findings into economical, widely-applicable solutions that create measurable impact for India and other nations in the Global South."

The National Innovation Network envisions establishing over 250 Centres of Excellence across India within three to five years, with participation from partner host institutions. Each centre will concentrate on enabling applied research, researcher-led business development, new venture creation, and market introduction in priority sectors. Collectively, NIN aims to facilitate the transformation of thousands of innovations annually from research settings to practical applications and commercial markets, driving economic development, job generation, and improved livelihoods across the country.
