Telangana Labour Minister Pledges Continued Worker Support as State Celebrates May Day

Hyderabad — On Thursday, Labour Employment and Mines Minister Dr. G Vivek Venkatswamy marked May Day with a commitment to advancing worker protections across Telangana, underscoring the Congress administration's dedication to labour rights in both formal and informal sectors.

The Minister characterised workers as fundamental to the state's development trajectory, emphasizing that the government remains vigilant in safeguarding their interests. He stressed that no segment of the workforce would be neglected in the state's policy framework.

Among recent legislative achievements, Dr. Venkatswamy highlighted the Telangana Gig and Platform-Based Workers Welfare Act, 2026, which furnishes legal safeguards and formal recognition to gig and platform workers. The legislation is projected to benefit approximately four lakh workers, representing what the Minister termed a watershed moment in labour protections.

The administration has also addressed longstanding concerns raised by RTC employees, implementing an 11% salary increase as part of broader welfare enhancements. Dr. Venkatswamy underscored the government's intention to ensure workers enjoy dignified employment and secure working conditions.

Drawing on historical perspectives, the Minister referenced the legacies of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and Kaka Venkatswamy, stating that their philosophical contributions continue to shape the state's approach to labour welfare initiatives. The government, he asserted, remains committed to expanding worker protections while maintaining focus on both established and emerging sectors of the economy.
