VFS Capital Chief Kuldip Maity Reportedly in Talks to Join BJP as West Bengal Shifts Political Course

West Bengal has witnessed a significant political transition. In May 2026, the state government changed hands, with the BJP replacing the Mamata Banerjee administration that had governed for 15 years. The shift has prompted renewed interest from business leaders and entrepreneurs keen to establish ventures and generate employment.
During Banerjee's tenure, numerous businessmen remained hesitant about investment, citing concerns over TMC policies. The period saw limited advancement in the state's business environment, despite the government's earlier success in bringing down the 35-year-old Left Front administration.
Against this backdrop of political realignment, attention has turned to Kuldip Maity, head of VFS Capital. Unconfirmed reports suggest the microfinance executive may soon join the Bharatiya Janata Party. According to sources, the formal membership could take place in the presence of BJP President Nitin Nabin or Union Minister Amit Shah. Observers note that Maity's reported vision aligns with the party's broader objectives, and that he is motivated by aspirations to revitalize Kolkata's historical standing as a major commercial centre while contributing to regional development.
Maity leads VFS Capital, Eastern India's largest microfinance institution. As Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, he has built the organisation into the region's No. 1 player in the sector. A social entrepreneur and development professional, Maity serves on the Board of Sa-Dhan, holds the position of Assistant Secretary at Village Welfare Society, and is a founding member of the Association of Micro Finance Institutions, West Bengal.
His career has centred on poverty alleviation and economic empowerment of marginalised communities, with particular focus on women. Maity holds a Doctorate degree along with two Master's qualifications—one in Business Administration and another in Social Sector. Over two decades, he has dedicated himself to fostering financial independence among underprivileged populations.
VFS Capital currently reaches over 4 lakh women borrowers through approximately 280 branches spanning 14 states. The institution plans to expand by launching 50 additional branches in the current year. Following the pandemic, the company has shifted focus toward affordable housing loans and MSME lending products. The firm was among 72 organisations that applied for a Small Finance Bank license, with Maity viewing such status as essential for offering deposit facilities to approximately 92% of their existing customer base.
The microfinance company maintains a Capital Adequacy Ratio of 24.17% and carries an 'A minus' MFI(I) grade rating. Headquartered in Kolkata, VFS Capital—formerly Village Financial Services Ltd—continues its mission of delivering sustainable financial solutions to underserved populations.
Maity's professional contributions have earned him multiple awards and accolades throughout his career.
