Telangana's Urea App Uncovers Large-Scale Fertiliser Distribution Fraud

Telangana's Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao revealed on Tuesday that the state's Urea App has uncovered substantial fraud in the fertiliser supply chain. The digital platform identified the unexplained loss of 6,000 urea bags in Siddipet district, prompting swift enforcement action.

In response to the discovery, authorities moved decisively against those involved. Two wholesale dealers and one retail dealer had their licences revoked. Criminal cases were registered, arrests were made, and disciplinary proceedings were initiated against an official found to have been negligent in their duties.

Similar breaches in fertiliser accountability came to light in Kamareddy district as well, triggering comparable enforcement measures by the government.

The Urea App has emerged as a critical tool in combating systemic irregularities. According to Tummala, the system's digital tracking capabilities have effectively minimised fraudulent billing practices, unauthorised stockpiling, and the diversion of fertiliser meant for agricultural subsidy programmes. The minister cautioned that the government would impose severe penalties on anyone found misappropriating urea supplies intended for farmers.

Current Fertiliser Status

Telangana maintains a reserve of 3.64 lakh metric tonnes of urea at present. The state has successfully obtained 5.62 lakh metric tonnes from the central allocation of six lakh metric tonnes.

Farmers have placed orders for 52.30 lakh urea bags through the app, with 46.03 lakh bags already delivered. The state currently has 79.29 lakh bags of urea available for distribution.
