Hyderabad: Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao conducted a review on Thursday of a weather advisory initiative designed to equip farmers with climate information for better agricultural planning.

Officials from the Development Innovation Lab presented their project framework to the Minister at the Secretariat, detailing how the system operates to benefit the farming community. The initiative provides advance forecasts on weather patterns and expected rainfall, enabling farmers to make informed decisions about their operations.

The scheme is currently operational through pilot phases in both Telangana and Odisha. Farmers receive real-time updates through SMS and WhatsApp channels, allowing them to adjust their agricultural schedules accordingly. This includes timing for planting, harvesting, and marketing activities.

The weather alerts help farmers mitigate damage from unpredictable climate events such as unseasonal precipitation, severe storms, and high-velocity winds. By acting on early warnings, farmers can significantly minimize losses to their crops.

Officials highlighted that the advisory system strengthens overall agricultural management by enabling proactive planning across all farming activities. Early notifications enhance decision-making capabilities among the farming population.

Seeking to scale up the initiative, the Development Innovation Lab team requested government backing for broader implementation. Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao instructed the Agriculture Director to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the expansion proposal. He also directed officials to evaluate the practical viability of scaling the project and proceed with implementation based on their assessment findings.
