Tata Trusts Pledges Major Support for IIM Bangalore's New Undergraduate Institution

Bengaluru — IIM Bangalore has unveiled a major philanthropic endowment from the Tata Trusts aimed at establishing a premier undergraduate institution that will uphold the same standards of academic excellence and international perspective as its existing postgraduate offerings.

The new School of Undergraduate Studies, situated roughly 27 kilometres from IIM Bangalore's primary campus, represents an institutional expansion designed to bring rigorous, globally-oriented undergraduate education to India. The grant will enable the development of academic infrastructure, campus facilities, and a comprehensive roadmap for long-term institutional growth.

Beginning in August this year, the school will launch two four-year, full-time residential degree programmes: a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Economics with a specialisation in Data Science, and a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Data Science with a specialisation in Economics. The initial intake will comprise 80 students, split equally between the two programmes. The educational framework merges economics, data science and business studies into an integrated curriculum designed to equip graduates for careers in data-driven sectors. The smaller cohort structure facilitates intensive mentoring and customised learning experiences within the IIMB ecosystem.

The endowment will finance the construction of modern academic and residential amenities, alongside the establishment of research centres at the convergence of fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, algorithmic design, Indian Knowledge Systems and practical business applications. The funding also reinforces the institution's capacity to recruit faculty members spanning diverse scholarly backgrounds.

The Tata Trusts have long prioritised supporting institutions that combine academic rigour with global engagement and relevance to India's socioeconomic priorities. The backing of a data and evidence-focused undergraduate programme aligns with this philosophy, reflecting the conviction that enduring philanthropic impact flows from investment in knowledge creation and the individuals who advance it.
