Sir David Attenborough has identified the landmark series Life on Earth as the defining moment of his illustrious career, a turning point that would reshape not only his own trajectory but also humanity's relationship with the natural world.

The renowned broadcaster's career at the BBC had already achieved considerable heights before Life on Earth came into being. He had climbed through institutional ranks and was even considered as a potential Director-General. Yet despite reaching such professional heights, Attenborough's passion remained directed toward the wilderness—the excitement of expeditions, the creative challenge of wildlife documentation, and the craft of communicating nature's narratives.

His brother Richard Attenborough, himself an accomplished filmmaker, provided counsel that would prove decisive. Richard urged him to continue pursuing the work at which he excelled. Within a short span, Attenborough received an opportunity to create a series centred on the evolution of life on our planet. Life on Earth emerged as a revolutionary production that fundamentally transformed how natural history reached audiences globally and reshaped the medium itself.

Reflecting on this pivotal juncture, Attenborough observed: "That was the turning point in my life."

As the celebrated naturalist enters his second century, Sony BBC Earth is marking the occasion with Making Life on Earth: Attenborough's Greatest Adventure, a special programme that provides unprecedented access to the behind-the-scenes development of the series that defined his legacy and altered perceptions of the natural world worldwide.

The programme will premiere on Sony BBC Earth on 8th May, with broadcasts scheduled at 1 PM and 9 PM.
