Telangana Board Overhauls Intermediate Education System with Comprehensive Reforms

Hyderabad: Beginning its academic year with significant structural changes, the Telangana Board of Intermediate Education (TGBIE) has unveiled a comprehensive reform package affecting examination patterns and internal assessment mechanisms. The initiative coincides with the opening of junior college admissions for 2026-27, which commenced on May 12 following the release of the admission notification on May 11.
Restructured Science Practicals
Science disciplines have undergone substantial modifications in their practical examination framework. Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology will now feature practical examinations valued at 15 marks each for both first and second-year students, marking a departure from the previous system where second-year students undertook 30-mark practical assessments. Theory examinations remain fixed at 60 marks across these subjects.
Mathematics Gets Activity-Based Component
The Board has introduced Activity-Based Learning (ABL) as a cornerstone of the new assessment structure for Mathematics. Both Maths-A and Maths-B now carry 15 marks for internal assessment in each year, with theory examinations continuing at 60 marks. This represents a fundamental shift from the earlier approach, which relied entirely on 75-mark theory examinations without any continuous evaluation component.
Humanities and Commerce Subjects Redesigned
Commerce, Accountancy, Economics, Political Science, History, Geography and Public Administration have been recalibrated to incorporate 20 marks for Activity-Based Learning internal assessment, with theory examinations adjusted to 80 marks from the previous 100-mark format.
Language instruction has followed a similar trajectory. Modern language subjects—Telugu, Hindi, English and Urdu—studied as Part-II now allocate 20 marks for internal assessment alongside 80 marks for theory examinations.
New ACE Group Established
The Board has created a dedicated ACE group combining Accountancy, Commerce and Economics, applying the same pattern of 20 marks for Activity-Based Learning internal assessment and 80 marks for theory examinations.
MEC Mathematics Receives Separate Treatment
Mathematics for Medical/Engineering/Commerce (MEC) has been assigned its own question paper under the revised framework, incorporating 20 marks for internal assessment and 80 marks for theory examinations, replacing the earlier 75-mark examination conducted without internal evaluation.
Updated Textbooks with Digital Integration
First-year Intermediate textbooks have been comprehensively revised for the 2026-27 academic year, with subject expert committees overseeing the development process. The new editions incorporate diagrams, knowledge boxes, QR codes, Indian knowledge systems and simulations as deemed appropriate for each subject. The Board announced on May 14 that textbook distribution would be completed before June 1, with officials prioritizing timely delivery to benefit students.
