Hyderabad: A consolidated welfare card system is set to become reality in Telangana, consolidating various government assistance programmes and public services into one accessible platform for residents.

Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao unveiled the proposal at a review meeting held Friday at the Dr B.R. Ambedkar Telangana Secretariat, following directives from Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. The initiative is designed to streamline citizen access to government support, enhance operational transparency, and advance digital service delivery across the state.

Before finalising Telangana's approach, Ramakrishna Rao instructed officials to examine how comparable smart card systems function in other Indian states.

Consolidating welfare benefits on a single platform

The Chief Secretary tasked departments with creating a unified card framework that brings all welfare scheme information together. The concept, framed as "One Card, Access to All Welfare Schemes," would require officials to establish a comprehensive implementation roadmap.

Key welfare initiatives including ration distribution, pension payments, Mahalakshmi scheme, and allied programmes would be integrated with the card system. The Chief Secretary particularly stressed the importance of safeguarding personal information and ensuring data security throughout system development.

Departments have been given ten days to present a detailed proposal. Officials were also instructed to assess the viability of attaching birth certificates, death certificates, pension documentation, and individual health records to the unified card platform.

The government's broader vision involves transforming how citizens interact with public services by consolidating them through a single digital interface. This approach would enable residents to access multiple welfare entitlements through one card rather than navigating separate systems.

Ramakrishna Rao underscored the necessity of strong interdepartmental coordination to ensure effective rollout of the scheme.

Attendees at the meeting included Special Chief Secretaries Vikas Raj and Sabyasachi Ghosh, Principal Secretaries Sandeep Kumar Sultania, Shailaja Ramaiyer, Yogita Rana and Christina Z. Chongthu, alongside additional senior government officials.
