Hyderabad — Telangana's prison system observed International Yoga Day 2026 through coordinated initiatives across all correctional facilities in the state, with a focus on supporting inmate rehabilitation and well-being.

Director General Dr. Soumya Mishra, IPS, spearheaded the statewide observance, positioning yoga as a transformative tool for physical conditioning, mental health and emotional equilibrium. The department launched yoga training programmes beginning June 10, extending through the official International Yoga Day on June 21.

Multiple organisations partnered with the initiative, including Patanjali Yogpeeth, Brahma Kumari, Yodha Academy, Art of Living, iDream Yoga Center, Tathvamasi Fitness Club, Vaidhik Yogpeeth Trust and Alphores Educational Institutions.

The centrepiece event took place at Central Prison, Cherlapalli, where Dr. Mishra attended a large-scale yoga session with substantial prisoner participation. Speaking to the assembled inmates, she outlined yoga's documented benefits for physical health, mental fortitude, emotional stability and personal discipline.

According to Dr. Mishra, consistent yoga practice cultivates constructive mindsets, tranquillity and restraint — qualities she identified as fundamental to rehabilitation and successful reentry into communities following release. She commended the prisoners' active involvement and encouraged sustained daily practice.

The Cherlapalli session was conducted by Art of Living instructors Dhanalakshmi, Uma Girish, Shayam Sundar, G. N. Pranay Kumar Naidu and T. Divya, who guided participants through postures, breathing techniques and meditation.

The department characterises yoga as one component of its comprehensive reformation strategy, which encompasses educational opportunities, vocational training, psychological support, athletic programmes and cultural engagement.

Attending the programme were Dr. D. Srinivas, DIG of Hyderabad Range; G. Pramod, Superintendent of Central Prison, Cherlapalli; D. Bharath, Superintendent of Prisoner's Agricultural Colony; and additional correctional staff and officials.
