Telangana Accelerates Plans for High-Speed Rail Corridors Connecting Major Cities

Hyderabad's administration is moving forward with ambitious plans to establish high-speed rail connections to neighbouring metropolitan centres. Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao convened a meeting on Friday at the Dr B.R. Ambedkar Telangana Secretariat to assess progress on the proposed corridors.

During the review, the Chief Secretary instructed officials to collaborate with the Union Railway Ministry and state government bodies to develop comprehensive proposals. He emphasised the need for coordinated departmental efforts in preparing project reports and finalising implementation strategies.

Key priorities identified at the meeting include resolving land acquisition requirements, ensuring seamless connectivity between cities, developing necessary infrastructure, and addressing other critical project components.

Ramakrishna Rao highlighted how the three proposed corridors—connecting Hyderabad to Mumbai, Chennai, and Bengaluru—could position Telangana as a significant economic hub and align with the state's Telangana Rising 2047 development framework. The Chief Secretary noted that such infrastructure would strengthen India's rapid transit capabilities, cater to evolving public transport demands, and provide substantial advantages to the industrial, information technology, and tourism sectors.

Land Requirements Outlined

Railway authorities disclosed that the Detailed Project Report for the Hyderabad-Pune-Mumbai corridor has already been completed. The proposed 671-kilometre route would require approximately 93 kilometres of land acquisition within Telangana's boundaries.

The Hyderabad-Bengaluru and Hyderabad-Chennai corridors would necessitate around 123 kilometres of land acquisition each. Additionally, authorities plan to acquire land in Kokapet and Shamshabad to establish railway depot facilities supporting these projects.

Coordination Framework Established

The Chief Secretary instructed the Roads and Buildings Department, HMDA authorities, and GMR Airport officials to work in tandem with Union Railway Ministry teams to ensure smooth project execution. He stressed that synchronised departmental collaboration would be essential for achieving successful implementation and infrastructure development outcomes.

The meeting was attended by Special Chief Secretaries Vikas Raj and Naveen Mittal, HMDA Metropolitan Commissioner Sarfaraz Ahmed, representatives from the Union Railway Ministry, and officials from GMR Airport.
