Telangana shifts to monthly funding for residential schools and hostels

Hyderabad: To address persistent delays in fund disbursement, the Telangana government has implemented a monthly payment framework for residential schools and welfare hostels. The transition aims to guarantee regular provision of diet charges, cosmetic supplies, and rental payments for facilities across the state.
The government has allocated Rs 221.24 crore through this restructured payment mechanism for institutions operating under the SC, ST, BC, Minority Welfare and Education departments. Officials indicated that the shift would create a more stable environment for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds while enhancing the quality of accommodation and educational services available to them.
Ending prolonged payment delays
Residential schools and hostels had previously contended with fund release delays spanning eight to nine months, creating significant operational challenges. These extended gaps forced institutions to struggle with food procurement, facility upkeep, and rent settlements.
Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Bhatti Vikramarka prioritised resolving these financial constraints. The government initially adopted a quarterly disbursement schedule before refining the approach further. The monthly system was unveiled during the state budget announcement for 2026-27.
Under the new arrangement, funds will flow to cover nutritional provisions, consumables, and accommodation costs for residential educational institutions. Officials stated that consistent financial support would enable uninterrupted food supplies to students and allow hostels to manage operational expenses without disruption.
Bhatti Vikramarka emphasised the administration's dedication to delivering quality education and improved residential conditions for students from marginalised communities. He framed the initiative as part of broader efforts to foster the comprehensive development and empowerment of disadvantaged students, preparing them to become engaged citizens.
