Hyderabad: The medical team at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) has been recognized for surpassing 2,000 kidney transplant procedures, a development that Telangana Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha characterized as a significant milestone for the state's public healthcare system.

At a special event held at NIMS on Saturday, the Minister commended the collective efforts of doctors, nurses, technicians, and support personnel in achieving this landmark. He emphasized that the accomplishment reflected sustained dedication and underscored the quality of care now available through government facilities.

Rajanarasimha noted that public hospitals in Telangana are now delivering services comparable to those offered by private healthcare institutions, operating under the vision of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.

Historically, kidney transplantation was accessible primarily to affluent patients who could bear the substantial costs. The landscape has shifted considerably with the Telangana Government's commitment to providing organ transplant services at no charge to economically disadvantaged populations through the Rajiv Aarogyasri scheme.

Beyond the surgical intervention itself, the state has introduced a comprehensive support system. Transplant recipients receive free medications for life following their procedures, and the government has invested in establishing a complete kidney care ecosystem spanning both dialysis and transplantation services.

The dialysis infrastructure has expanded significantly, with over 100 centers currently operational across Telangana. Plans are underway to add 79 additional dialysis facilities to enhance accessibility.

The expansion of transplant capabilities extends beyond NIMS. Gandhi Hospital and Osmania General Hospital have been strengthening their organ transplant programs in parallel. Gandhi Hospital recently inaugurated a dedicated State Organ Transplant Centre to support this initiative.

Looking forward, the Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS) in Sanathnagar is being developed as a Centre of Excellence specializing in organ transplantation, further consolidating the state's infrastructure in this critical healthcare domain.
