Telangana's Life Sciences Sector Reaches $145 Billion Valuation

Hyderabad's life sciences industry has crossed a significant threshold, with its ecosystem now valued at $145 billion. This achievement reflects the influx of over ₹84,000 crore invested into the sector during the past two years—marking the most rapid period of growth the state has ever experienced.

The milestone was unveiled at the seventh board meeting of the Telangana Life Sciences Foundation (TLSF), held under the chairmanship of Industries & Commerce Minister D. Sridhar Babu. During the meeting, TLSF CEO Shakthi M. Nagappan presented a comprehensive overview of sectoral expansion spanning his tenure of a decade, with particular emphasis on the accelerated development witnessed over the last two years under Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Minister Sridhar Babu's administration.

Since 2016, the life sciences sector has grown roughly threefold, positioning Hyderabad as a leading global hub for pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical technology, and health tech ventures. A particularly notable achievement is Hyderabad's status as home to technology and innovation centres operated by nine of the world's ten largest life sciences corporations—a distinction held by no other region outside the United States. This prominence stems from supportive regulatory frameworks, strategic international collaborations, and deliberate institutional development that have solidified Telangana's position within the global life sciences network.

During the meeting, board members commended Nagappan for his instrumental role in constructing and expanding the ecosystem during this period of transformation. In recognition of his service, the government has designated him as Advisor (Lifesciences), a position he will hold while maintaining his board membership.

"The sector has experienced remarkable development in recent times," Minister Sridhar Babu remarked. "Through deliberate ecosystem development supported by institutional excellence and consistent policy, we have drawn significant capital, established partnerships across borders, and propelled technological advancement and expansion. The Next Generation Life Sciences Policy positions us for the subsequent growth phase." The minister further urged that investment commitments related to the Green Pharma City project, totalling approximately ₹20,000 crore, be implemented without delay.

The board also welcomed the foundation's incoming CEO, Sarvesh Singh, who presented the strategic agenda for 2026-27. Board members stressed the importance of maintaining the current trajectory of ecosystem development, identifying the acceleration of Life Sciences Policy implementation and the establishment of the Telangana School of Life Sciences as critical priorities for the organization.
