In a significant rehabilitation effort, the Telangana government has brought 20 former Maoists from tribal communities into the mainstream by appointing them as tourist guides. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy distributed appointment letters to the selected candidates at an event coinciding with the foundation laying ceremony for the Future City Police Commissionerate in Bharat Future City.

The initiative, known as the Giridarshak programme, represents the government's first batch of appointments under this scheme. The tribal youth underwent training coordinated jointly by officials from the police, tribal welfare, tourism, forest, and endowments departments before receiving their placements with the Tourism Department.

The newly appointed guides will primarily operate in the Mulugu and Bhadradri Kothagudem districts, regions that previously experienced significant extremist activity. Their responsibilities will include sharing information about local culture and regional history with visitors, ensuring tourists adhere to forest regulations, and collaborating with officials to maintain visitor safety.

The programme aims to foster confidence among tribal communities while creating employment opportunities and promoting integrated tourism development. The guides will wear specially designated uniforms as they perform their duties.

During the ceremony, Chief Minister Reddy instructed officials to arrange six months of soft skills training for the appointees at Young India Skills University. He also directed the departments to provide subject-specific instruction and scholarships throughout the training period.

Officials noted the symbolic significance of the transition—individuals who once served as guides in forest areas for extremist groups will now guide tourists visiting those same regions. This shift reflects broader development initiatives being undertaken in both districts.
