Telangana Rolls Out Complimentary Accident Insurance for Government Staff

Hyderabad: In a significant move aimed at strengthening employee protections, Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka unveiled a complimentary accident insurance scheme for Telangana's government workforce on Thursday. The initiative received Cabinet approval under Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy's administration, designed to shield employees and their dependents from financial vulnerability.
Negotiated directly with banking institutions, the scheme imposes no additional fiscal strain on either the state exchequer or participating workers, Bhatti Vikramarka noted. He characterised the programme as a groundbreaking step in employee welfare.
Compensation Structure and Coverage
The insurance framework establishes distinct benefit levels depending on the nature of the accident. Families of employees who perish in road or general accidents will receive ₹1.25 crore in compensation. Air accident fatalities attract higher payouts, ranging from ₹2 crore to ₹3 crore.
Beyond death benefits, the scheme incorporates ₹10 lakh in life insurance protection for employees aged 18 to 60 years. Provisions for permanent and partial disability stemming from accidents are also embedded within the coverage.
Broad Eligibility Across Employment Tiers
The programme encompasses regular staff, contract workers, outsourced personnel, and other temporary employees whose monthly salaries flow through government administrative systems. This inclusive approach ensures that workers across all employment classifications receive protection.
Addressing the rationale behind the initiative, Bhatti Vikramarka emphasised that the measure aims to prevent families from enduring financial distress following the loss of a primary income earner. The government seeks to provide reassurance to employees' households during periods of hardship.
Salary Reforms and Additional Welfare Initiatives
The Deputy Chief Minister also highlighted improvements in salary disbursement practices under the current administration. He noted that the previous government frequently delayed wage payments until mid-month, creating difficulties for employees managing housing, vehicle, and education loan obligations. Timely EMI payments became challenging under those circumstances.
The present government has instituted stringent financial management protocols to ensure salaries reach employees on the first of each month, notwithstanding budgetary constraints, he stated.
Beyond accident insurance, the Cabinet has resolved a long-standing gap in employee healthcare support through the introduction of permanent health cards. Additionally, authorities have approved the establishment of a dedicated trust to deliver comprehensive cashless medical coverage to all government employees.
