Telangana Presents Ambitious EV Charging Model at National Infrastructure Conference

Hyderabad: The state of Telangana has presented its electric vehicle charging infrastructure roadmap and deployment approach at a national-level conference in Bengaluru focused on expanding EV charging networks across India under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme.
The gathering drew participation from Central government ministries, state authorities, public sector enterprises, and private sector players in the EV space. Heavy Industries Minister H D Kumaraswamy inaugurated the proceedings, with senior officials from various states also in attendance.
Telangana's Special Chief Secretary for Energy, Navin Mittal, outlined the state's achievements in electric mobility adoption. According to his presentation, the state has registered more than 2.8 lakh electric vehicles, with 91,572 new EV registrations recorded during the 2025-26 fiscal year. This represents approximately five percent of all new vehicle registrations across Telangana.
The electric vehicle sector in Telangana has grown substantially, with the market valued at Rs 6,297 crore during 2025-26. The state's public transport fleet has undergone significant transformation, with 325 electric buses currently operational across six city depots. Additionally, efforts are underway to convert 240 existing diesel buses to electric-powered vehicles.
State authorities have set an ambitious target of deploying 2,800 electric buses in Hyderabad by 2027. To support this expansion, Telangana has established 1,063 EV charging stations, of which approximately 600 are located within Hyderabad city limits.
The Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TGREDCO) operates nearly 200 public charging stations within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation jurisdiction. Charging consumption has surged dramatically, increasing nearly four times year-on-year, indicating rising EV adoption.
Under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme's first phase, TGREDCO has secured Rs 10.24 crore to install EV charging infrastructure at 116 additional locations across the state. Looking ahead, Telangana has charted a course to establish 6,000 EV charging and battery swapping stations by 2030, escalating to 12,000 stations by 2035.
To incentivize electric vehicle ownership, the state provides complete exemption from road tax and vehicle registration fees for all electric vehicles.
