Sunburn Festival Returns for 19th Year with Move to Mahalaxmi Racecourse and Compact Two-Day Format

As December approaches each year, anticipation builds across the country for Sunburn Festival, an event that has evolved from a pioneering electronic music gathering into a defining cultural touchstone for India's music community. The festival's 19th iteration will unfold on December 18th and 19th, 2026, marking a significant shift with its relocation to Mahalaxmi Racecourse in the heart of Mumbai.

The venue carries considerable historical resonance for Sunburn, having hosted transformative performances over the years. Avicii's early India appearance in 2011, Swedish House Mafia's celebrated 2013 show, Martin Garrix's 2016 performance, and Keinemusik's recent event all took place at this iconic location. The centrally positioned racecourse offers both the scale required for a major festival and the accessibility that draws attendees from across the metropolitan region and beyond.

This year's edition introduces a restructured format designed to intensify the experience. Rather than spreading programming across multiple days, the festival will compress its lineup into a more concentrated, high-energy two-day affair. The experience will extend further with a substantial closing party at NSCI Dome on December 20th, transforming the festival's conclusion into a separate high-impact event following the final performances at Mahalaxmi Racecourse.

Ticket sales will follow a staggered approach. Rupay Credit Card holders gain early access beginning May 14th, 2026 at noon, followed by registered users on May 16th at noon. General ticket sales commence May 18th, 2026 at noon, all through BookMyShow.

Recent audience research from Sunburn Festival 2025 attendees reveals the deep connection fans maintain with the event. Approximately 81 percent of survey respondents cited the festival's distinctive atmosphere and energy as their primary draw, with cutting-edge visual and stage production as secondary factors. Geographic reach extends significantly beyond Mumbai, with roughly half of attendees travelling from other cities, demonstrating the festival's appeal across India's music community. The social dimension remains central, as over 56 percent of attendees choose to experience the festival alongside friends, underscoring its role as a communal cultural practice.

Karan Singh, CEO of Sunburn, articulated the vision behind these changes: "Sunburn Festival has always prioritized its audience, developing annually into a significant cultural tradition for India's music enthusiasts. Our evolution has allowed us to welcome new audiences while maintaining our core community. Every choice we have made—from selecting Mahalaxmi Racecourse to restructuring the festival format—centers on enriching how attendees engage with the experience. We aim to maintain our position as a benchmark for live entertainment in India while meeting international standards, where community, storytelling and scale converge with unprecedented power."

The 2026 edition operates under the thematic banner "Awaken the Core," reflecting not merely a creative concept but rather the festival's own trajectory. The theme signals a transition from spectacle-driven production toward greater depth and intensity, mirroring the concentrated force of the assembled audience.

Since its 2007 inception as an introduction to global electronic music, Sunburn has grown into an annual ritual for thousands of dedicated followers. The festival has transcended its role as a performance platform, becoming instead a shared experience defined by the connections formed between attendees and the unmistakable collective energy that characterizes each edition.

Mumbai's emergence as the festival's home has amplified its reach considerably. The city has expanded both the scale of operations and the audience base, attracting music enthusiasts from throughout India. Sunburn Festival now occupies a unique position where established attendees and first-time participants converge in a unified cultural moment.

With dates confirmed and a fresh chapter beginning, Sunburn Festival 2026 promises a stellar artist roster alongside immersive programming designed to establish this as one of the festival's most significant iterations.

Sunburn Festival 2026 is presented by Rupay and driven by Hyundai, with Tuborg Zero Packaged Drinking Water as a partner.
