Kondapur Subway Outlet Cited for Multiple Food Safety Lapses in Hygiene Inspection

Hyderabad's Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) has flagged significant food safety concerns at a Subway restaurant following a routine inspection at its Rajarajeshwar Nagar branch in Kondapur. The assessment uncovered improper vegetable storage practices, deficient sanitation protocols, and absent documentation required for compliance.
The inspection, part of CMC's systematic oversight across the Cyberabad zone, documented several areas of non-compliance alongside some commendable practices. Food preparation staff demonstrated adherence to basic hygiene standards, wearing gloves and aprons as required. The facility's structural elements—walls, flooring, and ceilings—met acceptable standards, and the establishment maintained segregated storage for vegetarian and non-vegetarian items while avoiding synthetic food colouring additives.
The violations discovered during the visit, however, proved more troubling. Inspectors determined that incoming raw vegetables were not subjected to adequate quality checks during procurement. A significant concern emerged when inspectors located deteriorated lettuce in refrigerated storage. Cut vegetables including onions, tomatoes, and lettuce lacked proper identification labels, with some items surpassing their expiration dates. The preparation area floor contained visible food waste, and inspectors spotted insects in the food preparation zone. Maintenance deficiencies were evident in sink and washing facilities.
Documentation gaps compounded the hygiene concerns. Food handlers could not furnish required medical fitness certificates, food testing documentation, or water quality analysis reports. Inspectors also noted that staff possessed insufficient knowledge of proper food handling safety protocols.
In response, CMC teams immediately removed all rotten and unlabelled vegetables from the premises. Authorities have mandated corrective action and plan to issue an improvement notice to the establishment.
The outlet achieved a score of 58 out of 96 points in the hygiene evaluation, corresponding to a 60 per cent rating. Under CMC guidelines, establishments scoring between 50 and 90 per cent are required to receive improvement notices and undertake remedial measures.
CMC officials stated their commitment to conducting continued inspections across restaurants and food service operations throughout Cyberabad to maintain hygiene benchmarks and protect consumer health.
