St. George's University Opens August 2026 Admissions for Indian Medical Students

May 5, 2026

Bangalore: St. George's University School of Medicine (SGU), located in Grenada in the West Indies, has opened its application window for Indian students seeking admission to the August 2026 intake. The timing of this cohort has been specifically calibrated to match India's educational schedule, eliminating the necessity for students to take a year off between their undergraduate studies and medical training.

The institution brings considerable expertise in educating medical students from across the globe. Its alumni base exceeds 25,000 graduates who are now working in more than 50 countries worldwide. During 2026, SGU's graduating class secured in excess of 800 positions in US residency programs spanning 23 different medical specialties. The university has cultivated clinical training partnerships with over 75 hospitals and health centers across the United States and United Kingdom, providing students with comprehensive hands-on experience throughout their studies.

A notable feature of SGU's programme is its longstanding collaboration with Northumbria University (NU) in the United Kingdom, which has been in place since 2007. This partnership enables qualifying students to pursue portions of their medical education at the UK institution. Students accepted to the August intake will have the flexibility to commence their studies either at SGU's campus in Grenada or at NU in the United Kingdom. Upon graduation, they receive both an MD degree from SGU and a Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMedSci) degree from NU—a dual credential designed to enhance career prospects in international healthcare settings.

Kevin Romao, SGU's Regional Director for Asia, emphasised the importance of programme timing for medical aspirants in India. "For students in India, the scheduling of their medical training represents a crucial factor in shaping their professional trajectory," Romao noted. "Our August intake permits students to transition directly into our MD programmes immediately following their undergraduate completion, contingent on their academic standing. The strong track record of our graduates securing US residency positions demonstrates the diverse career opportunities available to our students from Asia."

SGU also prioritises financial accessibility for its international student population. The university administers a range of financial aid packages and merit-based scholarships designed to reduce the financial burden of pursuing medical education internationally. "We provide several academically-focused scholarships, including the SGU Medical Scholar Award, for high-performing students from international regions including India," Romao explained. "These awards help make world-class medical education more attainable for talented students globally."
