Sony BBC Earth Marks Sir David Attenborough's Centenary with Premiere of Documentary Special
The influential naturalist and broadcaster Sir David Attenborough will reach the milestone of 100 years on 8th May 2026, an occasion Sony BBC Earth is marking with an extensive programming celebration that recognises his profound impact on how the world understands nature and wildlife.
The channel has unveiled a 100-day tribute initiative that brings together some of Sir David Attenborough's most memorable documentaries from across his storied career. The centrepiece of this tribute will be an exclusive one-hour documentary, 'Making Life on Earth: Attenborough's Greatest Adventure', scheduled to broadcast on 8th May 2026 at both 12 PM and 9 PM.
The special takes viewers into the making of the groundbreaking 1979 series Life on Earth, offering behind-the-scenes perspectives through exclusive interviews with Sir David Attenborough and members of the original production team. Through their recollections, the documentary explores the production's ambitious scope and the obstacles faced during filming, a period when colour television and international air travel were still relatively novel technologies.
The crew encountered significant dangers while documenting the series globally. These included navigating a coup in the Comoros, facing gunfire during filming in Rwanda, and dealing with threats from Saddam Hussein's military forces in Iraq. Upon its broadcast, Life on Earth reached an estimated 500 million viewers worldwide and established Sir David Attenborough as the pre-eminent wildlife filmmaker of his generation. A particularly celebrated sequence from the series—his encounter with mountain gorillas in Rwanda—remains among the most memorable moments in television history.
In remarks featured in the documentary, Sir David Attenborough reflects on Life on Earth's significance: "I have been fortunate to spend my career creating natural history programmes, but one series transformed everything – Life on Earth. It represented the most ambitious lifestyle expedition undertaken to that point, the inaugural truly global natural history series shot entirely in colour, with nothing of comparable scale attempted previously. The series introduced viewers to natural environments previously unfamiliar to them. Our objective was to communicate the greatest story to audiences everywhere. It marked a pivotal chapter in my career."
The production team behind 'Making Life on Earth: Attenborough's Greatest Adventure' includes Mike Davis as Executive Producer, Sue Aartse-Tuyn as Production Executive, and Victoria Bobin as Producer-Director.
Throughout its history, Sony BBC Earth has served as the primary broadcast home for Sir David Attenborough's most celebrated documentaries. The channel has presented major series including Planet Earth I and II, Blue Planet II, Frozen Planet I, The Hunt, Dynasties, and Life, consistently bringing Indian audiences into intimate contact with the splendour, intensity, and vulnerability of the natural world.
