SOCIAL Releases 'Voices from the Hood': A Deep Dive into Young India's Culture, Aspirations, and Lifestyle Choices
Hyderabad — SOCIAL, a leading youth culture institution in India, has introduced "Voices from the Hood," a groundbreaking cultural study that examines the attitudes, behaviours, and dreams driving young Indians across the country. Drawing on data from more than 10,000 participants in cities throughout India, the report provides a comprehensive examination of how today's youth engage with social connections, digital spaces, entertainment options, travel, romantic relationships, and professional goals amid constant cultural transformation.
The study reveals a generation characterised by their desire for meaningful experiences, strong digital engagement, and cultural adaptability—simultaneously pursuing their ambitions while honouring tradition, blending virtual personas with tangible community bonds.
SOCIAL has spent over twelve years serving as a gathering space for diverse groups including community members, content creators, students, working professionals, and business-minded individuals. This positioning has given the organisation unique insight into the evolving patterns and discussions that define urban youth culture. Through "Voices from the Hood," SOCIAL formalises this observational role by systematically capturing the perspectives, goals, and everyday practices of India's younger generation.
"Culture emerges in the spaces where individuals gather to build connections, work together and celebrate shared moments," explained Riyaaz Amlani, Founder & Managing Director of Impresario Entertainment & Hospitality Pvt. Ltd. "Through 'Voices from the Hood,' we are documenting the essence of young India—their drive, their concerns, their daily habits and the defining cultural touchstones of this era."
Divya Aggarwal, Chief Growth Officer at Impresario Entertainment & Hospitality Pvt. Ltd., added: "The report's foundation rests on one core principle: engaging with young India on a large scale and truly hearing them. What emerges is a generation that communicates openly, possesses significant cultural awareness and continuously influences society through their everyday decisions—whether in how they interact socially, allocate their money, pursue their goals or experience new places. For our organisation, this serves as both a cultural framework and a business resource for maintaining authentic relationships with youth culture."
Santanu Hazarika, who shaped the report's aesthetic direction, described the visual approach: "Drawing inspiration from SOCIAL's commitment to capturing young India's voice, I envisioned this report as a cultural document—comparable to a modern cultural reference guide. The design conveys the energy, contradictions and drive characteristic of today's youth through both quantitative data and dynamic visual elements. Every layer of the design tells a story; each section functions as a snapshot of a generation, merging vitality, cultural meaning and nostalgic elements in a way that mirrors how young Indians perceive their world. The approach balances structure with spontaneity, inviting viewers to engage, contemplate and forge stronger bonds with the culture presented."
Entertainment and Leisure Patterns
For young India, entertainment has shifted from passive consumption to active, communal, and technology-driven engagement.
The entertainment landscape now encompasses streaming services, social networks, interactive gaming, in-person performances and exploration. Young people navigate effortlessly between digital screens and real-world social gatherings, mixing online content with tangible recreational pursuits.
The data shows cinema remains the leading recreational outing at 65%, surpassing cafés, bars and dining establishments. Physical activities and adventure pursuits rank second at 63%, gaining traction among younger Gen Z and older Millennials interested in experiences like hiking, paintball competitions and racing simulations. Cultural activities hold appeal as well, with stand-up comedy drawing 26% of youth audiences and theatre attracting 21%.
Live music and performance engagement is substantial: 17% attend musical performances or live shows every week, with an additional 16% attending monthly, demonstrating consistent participation in the music and performance landscape. Mobile technology dominates daily habits, with 35% using applications between one and three hours daily and 28% between three and five hours, underscoring the central role of digital platforms in how youth communicate, consume entertainment and find new content.
Streaming dominates residential entertainment, with Netflix commanding 77% of subscriptions, trailed by Amazon Prime Video at 54% and JioHotstar at 42%. Travel decisions reflect a preference for experience-centred journeys, with 55% choosing adventure-oriented travel and 37% preferring relaxation-focused getaways.
These patterns illustrate a generation for whom entertainment functions as both personal identity and lived experience, where digital engagement and real-world discovery coexist naturally.
Career Goals and Personal Values
Young India demonstrates both strong ambition and thoughtful reflection, seeking financial autonomy while negotiating identity questions, interpersonal bonds and personal principles. The report identifies a generation deeply committed to professional advancement while simultaneously reimagining conventional markers of maturity including matrimony, cultural identity and self-actualisation.
Tradition maintains significance in youth identity, with 46% viewing cultural practices as integral to their values and lifestyle. However, perspectives on intimate relationships are shifting: 43% support traditional marriage, whereas 31% remain open to alternative relationship models. Financial achievement ranks highly, with 67% considering it very important and 15% somewhat important to their lives. When considering generational challenges, respondents highlighted education (28%), psychological wellbeing (26%) and job availability (24%) as their primary concerns.
Self-employment holds strong appeal, with 42% identifying business creation as their ideal professional aspiration. Dating represents a routine component of youth experience, with 19% dating three times weekly and 21% dating once or twice per week.
This generation balances goal-oriented thinking with introspection, merging professional ambition with evolving cultural perspectives.
Dining Culture
Eating out has transformed into a fundamental social practice for young consumers. Contemporary restaurants function as social hubs where youth mark special occasions, strengthen friendships and decompress. The food experience has become inseparable from social identity, personal discovery and collective moments.
Frequency is substantial: 28% dine out one or two times per week, while 21% do so three to four times weekly. Notably, 19% eat out nearly every day, particularly among professionals and students in metropolitan regions. Budget-conscious decisions predominate, with ₹1,000–₹2,000 representing the typical spending range for 34% of diners.
Restaurant discovery happens primarily through personal recommendations at 53%, with digital advertising at 36% and celebrity endorsements at 25% playing supporting roles. Digital food platforms prove essential, with Zomato/District utilised by 54% of respondents.
These statistics demonstrate that restaurants have become modern social environments where cuisine, companionship and memorable moments intersect.
Nightlife and Social Outings
For young Indians, evening entertainment centres on experiences, musical performances and social atmosphere rather than alcohol consumption alone. After-hours activities provide venues for personal expression, social connection and cultural engagement, informed by online discovery methods and changing attitudes toward alcohol.
Fifty-six percent enjoy alcoholic beverages during social outings, while 18% drink moderately, reflecting diverse consumption patterns. Twenty-six percent abstain entirely, demonstrating varied nightlife preferences. Participation frequency remains consistent, with 23% socialising or attending events once or twice weekly. Spending habits cluster around ₹1,000–₹2,000 for 33% of participants. Digital channels drive discovery, particularly social media at 34%, followed by celebrity recommendations at 19% and platform aggregators at 16%. Premium spirits are gaining ground, with 50% selecting high-end brands, indicating movement toward quality-focused purchasing.
Contemporary nightlife functions as a vehicle for community participation and cultural expression, where music, social bonds and shared moments take precedence.
Food Delivery Services
Food delivery has become an ingrained aspect of daily life, fuelled by accessibility, product range and digital convenience.
Delivery platforms have become central to how young people consume food. Zomato dominates with 44% usage, Swiggy follows at 25%, while 27% regularly alternate between both services. Ordering decisions typically stem from convenience needs, menu variety and time limitations rather than occasional treats.
Beyond numerical findings, "Voices from the Hood" functions as a cultural portrait of contemporary youth, documenting their aspirations, worries, online experiences and the social environments where culture develops.
As India's young demographic continues to shape cultural and commercial landscapes, the report aspires to equip businesses, artists, and cultural commentators with deeper comprehension of what energises and motivates this generation.
