Hyderabad: In a significant milestone for India's mining industry, the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) is moving forward with plans to hire women dumper operators, marking a departure from over 130 years of male-only operations in these roles.

The initiative comes after the Telangana government, led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu, directed the state-owned mining company to prioritise women's participation and advancement in its workforce.

At Singareni's open cast mines, heavy dumpers weighing between 60 and 100 tonnes form the backbone of operations, ferrying coal and overburden from quarries to the surface. For nearly half a century, only men have operated these vehicles, roles traditionally considered demanding due to the physical stamina and technical proficiency required, coupled with exposure to extreme weather conditions ranging from intense heat to heavy rainfall and freezing temperatures.

When the company issued a call for interested women employees to transition into dumper operator positions, the response was encouraging. Around 35 women initially expressed their willingness to pursue the opportunity. However, the role necessitated both standard driving credentials and heavy motor vehicle licences—qualifications that not all applicants possessed.

To bridge this gap, SCCL arranged comprehensive heavy vehicle training at no cost to candidates. The Telangana Institute of Driving Education and Skills (TIDES) in Sircilla conducted the programme, with the company bearing all expenses. Thirteen women successfully completed the intensive training and signalled their readiness to take on dumper operations.

The company has committed to placing these trained women in its forthcoming dumper operator recruitment drive. Officials emphasised that this effort aligns with the state government's broader commitment to gender inclusion across sectors.

Beyond this initiative, SCCL has already demonstrated its commitment to expanding women's roles in mining. Women staff are now exclusively staffing the blasting division at the Bellampalli Khairiguda open cast mine—a particularly challenging operational area. These employees are executing blasting tasks with proficiency comparable to their male counterparts. Additionally, the company established its first-ever women rescue team, another historic achievement for the organisation.

Several women who completed the dumper operator training shared their experiences. Many admitted to initial apprehension about whether they possessed the physical and technical capacity to manage such heavy machinery. Through hands-on experience during the training phase, however, their confidence grew substantially. The trainees drew parallels to women's achievements across other demanding fields, citing examples from space exploration to underscore that women are equally capable of excelling in specialised and physically demanding roles.

The trainees expressed gratitude to both the state government and SCCL management for creating this pathway, viewing the opportunity as recognition of women's untapped potential within the mining sector. Company officials have signalled that this represents the beginning of a broader commitment to offering equal opportunities to women in challenging and specialised positions across the organisation.
