Singareni's Battery Storage System Delivers ₹25.66 Lakh in Savings Over Four Months

Hyderabad: A battery energy storage initiative at Singareni has generated substantial cost savings by capturing and repurposing excess solar generation, the company announced.

Operating at the 28 MW solar facility in Mandamarri, the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has accumulated ₹25.66 lakh in financial gains since commencing operations in January. The project was initiated following directives from Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu.

The installation of the 1 MW battery storage facility required an investment of ₹2.5 crore and functions as a complementary component to the solar plant's operations.

Previously, Singareni channeled surplus electricity from its solar installations to the Telangana grid without compensation under existing power purchase arrangements. The new system addresses this inefficiency by storing daytime solar output for later consumption during operational hours, eliminating the need to supply excess power to the distribution company at no cost.

Within the first four months of operation, the battery system accumulated and redeployed 3,35,485 units of electricity, translating directly into the financial savings achieved.

Singareni maintains solar generation capacity totalling 245.5 MW distributed across eight locations throughout Telangana. Of this capacity, 147 MW operates under Open Access arrangements, while 98.50 MW functions as captive generation linked to the state power distribution network.

The Mandamarri installation primarily supplies the local mining operations and residential communities in the Mandamarri and Srirampur regions. However, generation regularly exceeded local consumption requirements, prompting the company to deploy the battery storage system as a pilot initiative.

Company officials expressed satisfaction with the system's performance, characterising the outcomes as validation of battery storage technology's potential in renewable energy management. Singareni indicated readiness to replicate the model at additional sites in alignment with the state government's renewable energy expansion objectives.
