Sheena Chohan Moderates Discussions on Cinema's Future at Mumbai International Film Festival

Actress Sheena Chohan took centre stage at the 2026 Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF), facilitating two substantive conversations about the direction of contemporary cinema and cultural expression. The festival drew filmmakers, artists, curators, and cultural figures from across the globe, with Sheena also meeting Ashish Shelar, Maharashtra's Minister for Cultural Affairs, during the event.

On June 16, Sheena guided a panel titled "Are Micro-Dramas the Fast Fashion of Cinema?" bringing together producer Sameer Modi, actress Archana Kavi, actor Ujjwal Chopra, and German filmmaker Rafael, who specialises in short-form content. The discussion examined the surge of condensed storytelling formats and the tension between artistic substance and the realities of diminishing viewer attention spans. Drawing on her acting background, Sheena stressed that regardless of how narrative forms shift, the fundamentals—compelling narratives, layered characters, and genuine emotional resonance—remain irreplaceable.

Two days later on June 18, Sheena convened the inaugural roundtable "Many Forms, One Vision: Celebrating Diversity in Film Festivals," assembling seasoned festival professionals and curators: Anand Varadaraj, Deepak Beshra, Premendra Mazumdar, Nilotpal Mazumdar, Shaikh Khaja Vali, Patricia Sanchez Mora, and Prakash Magdum, Managing Director of the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC).

With representatives attending from 46 countries, Sheena highlighted how MIFF's international reach underscores film festivals' critical function in bridging cultural divides and amplifying underrepresented narratives to worldwide audiences.

"When we celebrate diversity in film festivals, we celebrate the power of storytelling to connect people across cultures, languages, and perspectives, ignite imagination, inspire understanding, and uplift culture," Sheena remarked during the roundtable. "Though the stories may differ, they share a common purpose: to broaden our view of the world. Film festivals allow us to see the world through many different eyes, with the purpose of opening our minds."

Sheena reflected on her own trajectory within the festival circuit, noting that her recognition began with a Best Actress nomination at the Shanghai International Film Festival. Her subsequent work has spanned independent productions across various languages, many of which have travelled internationally. Films featuring her in principal roles have been selected for prominent festivals including Busan, Dubai, Shanghai, and Kolkata, experiences that have reinforced her conviction about the value of global exhibition platforms in nurturing substantive cinema.

A recurring concern throughout the roundtable was the mounting difficulty independent and diverse films encounter in achieving market visibility and distribution channels. The panel reached consensus that festivals serve as indispensable venues for identifying emerging talent, fostering dialogue across communities, and recognising artistic merit.

Throughout both forums, Sheena underscored cinema's enduring obligation to entertain, provoke thought, shift perspectives, and participate in meaningful cultural conversation. Her moderation demonstrated how storytelling serves as a bridge between geographies and worldviews.
