As Rabindranath Tagore's birth anniversary arrives, actress Sheena Chohan is revisiting a pivotal period in her artistic development—her acclaimed portrayals in Mukti and Patralekha, both cinema projects drawing from Tagore's rich literary canon and helmed by filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta.

The two films presented nuanced explorations of female characters that predated the current wave of women-centered cinema. In Mukti, Sheena embodied Bela, Tagore's daughter, inhabiting a character situated within the poet's personal and creative universe. Patralekha saw her take on the role of a woman engaged in quiet yet powerful resistance against the emotional confines of matrimony—a figure who transcends the limitations of written correspondence and verse, instead charting her own path toward self-discovery and autonomy.

Preparing for these performances required Sheena to undertake a comprehensive artistic investigation. She immersed herself in Tagore's verse, prose, philosophical frameworks and emotional undercurrents to bring authenticity to these multifaceted characterizations.

Reflecting on the work, Sheena explained: "Engaging with Tagore's creative world at the outset of my career reshaped how I approach acting. I devoted myself to studying his poetry, the spaces between words, the emotional complexity embedded in his female figures and the cadence of his language—not merely to execute a performance, but to grasp the essence beneath the surface. Both Mukti and Patralekha required substantial introspection, restraint and emotional authenticity."

She continued: "What remained with me was recognizing how advanced and emotionally intricate Tagore's women were as characters. They possessed resilience, distinctiveness, yearning, defiance and elegance simultaneously. These projects became foundational to my development as an actor and linked me to cinema and literature that matters."

These works stand as defining moments in Sheena Chohan's trajectory, establishing her commitment to character-driven performances rooted in literary adaptation and narratives centered on women's experiences. Since these early projects, she has starred in fifteen nationally and internationally recognized independent productions, solidifying her reputation as a skilled performer known for layered interpretations and female-centered storytelling.
