Hyderabad — The literary world mourns the loss of Sharada Ashokavardhan, a towering figure in Telugu letters who died Wednesday evening at her daughter's home in Banjara Hills. She was 87.

Throughout a distinguished career spanning decades, Ashokavardhan established herself as a versatile creative force, producing more than 80 books that encompassed novels, verse, dramatic works, essays, song lyrics, stories for young readers, and regular newspaper contributions. Her tenure with All India Radio further cemented her reputation, particularly for the lyrical pieces she crafted during that period.

Among her most celebrated compositions was "Manasaayera Madhava," while "Ganapathi Suprabatham" gained widespread recognition when rendered by acclaimed vocalist M. Balamuralikrishna. Musician Palagummi Viswanadham collaborated with her on numerous musical pieces. Her literary output transcended linguistic boundaries, with translations appearing in Tamil, Kannada, and Hindi. Academic scholars have frequently drawn upon her works as subjects for advanced research and postgraduate dissertations.

Beyond her creative endeavors, Ashokavardhan held significant administrative positions, serving as Joint Director within the State Information Department and subsequently as Director of Jawahar Bal Bhavan. She also gained prominence as a commentator for cultural programs organized by former Chief Minister and film personality N. T. Rama Rao.

Her achievements earned her three Nandi Awards, along with recognition through the Telugu University Award, the Susheela Narayana Reddy Award, and the Rajyalakshmi Award for her literary contributions.

She is survived by four daughters, among them Shailaja Suman, known for her work as a journalist, broadcast presenter, and author.

Her passing represents a significant loss to the Telugu cultural landscape and literary heritage.
