Telangana Fast-Tracks Nine SCCL Mining Projects to Avert Coal Shortage

The Telangana government is accelerating development of nine new mining ventures under Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) to counter anticipated coal deficits and strengthen the state's energy security framework.
The initiative addresses production shortfalls arising from the phased shutdown of existing mines as reserves deplete. Beyond energy supply concerns, the expansion is designed to safeguard employment and respond to Telangana's rising power consumption.
State authorities have instructed SCCL to expedite groundwork and obtain all necessary regulatory approvals without delay. In response, SCCL has formulated comprehensive proposals for the nine ventures and forwarded them to the Union Ministries of Coal, Forest, and Environment for necessary clearances.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu have been actively monitoring the clearance timeline. Bhatti Vikramarka has held discussions with New Delhi officials, emphasizing the urgency of approvals given Telangana's future energy requirements.
Three projects have already secured clearance. Additionally, coal extraction has commenced at the Naini Block in Odisha following coordination with the state administration. The VK Coal Mine in Kothagudem has completed essential regulatory procedures and stands prepared for operations to begin.
SCCL anticipates that four operational mines will cease production by 2027-28, potentially reducing annual coal output by 12.51 million tonnes. The proposed mining initiatives are intended to fill this production void and guarantee a steady coal supply for approximately two decades.
The portfolio encompasses new open-pit mining operations, enhancement of current facilities, and recovery of coal deposits from previously abandoned underground workings. Telangana authorities have designated all nine undertakings as critical to bolstering SCCL's production capabilities going forward.
SCCL Chairman and Managing Director Dr Buddhaprakash Jyoti convened a comprehensive review with senior staff on Saturday to evaluate project advancement. He directed officials to prioritize pending approvals and target the commencement of at least three ventures during the ongoing financial year, aligned with the state government's timeline expectations.
