Rising Medical Costs Underscore Importance of Adequate Health Insurance, Says SBI General Insurance

Bangalore — India's households are grappling with mounting medical expenses, prompting insurance providers to emphasise the critical role of comprehensive health coverage. SBI General Insurance has unveiled a fresh campaign, continuing its "Chuniye Bharosa, Apno Sa" initiative with actor Pankaj Tripathi, to underscore why adequate health insurance has become essential in today's uncertain environment.
The backdrop for this message is stark. Government health survey data from the National Statistical Office's 80th round reveals that an average hospitalisation now imposes out-of-pocket costs exceeding ₹34,000 on Indian households. This figure reflects the widening gap between actual medical expenses and what insurance coverage typically addresses, even as more families obtain health policies.
The insurance landscape is shifting as lifestyle-related ailments proliferate and medical inflation accelerates. These twin pressures are squeezing household finances, particularly when unexpected health crises strike. The new film, rooted in everyday scenarios, depicts the relentless work routines, extended commutes, and personal sacrifices individuals undertake to provide for their families. Yet amid this dedication, the narrative suggests, many overlook a fundamental responsibility: safeguarding their family's health and financial security.
Rathin Lahiri, Head of Marketing and Corporate Social Responsibility at SBI General Insurance, outlined the company's perspective on financial readiness. "Healthcare preparedness extends beyond merely holding an insurance policy," he noted. For salaried professionals managing family obligations, dedicating at least 2% of annual earnings to insurance represents a sensible approach to addressing evolving health requirements and escalating medical costs, he added.
The campaign advocates for a proactive stance toward family protection rather than reactive crisis management. Health insurance, according to this view, is transitioning from a safety net for emergencies into a foundational component of long-term healthcare planning and financial stability. Families equipped with appropriate coverage can better weather medical uncertainties without experiencing severe financial disruption.
SBI General Insurance's Health Alpha plan exemplifies this evolving approach, offering customisable protection levels, cashless treatment access through an extensive hospital network, preventive care benefits, coverage for advanced medical treatments, and streamlined claims processing. The company positions such offerings as tailored solutions enabling customers to select protection aligned with their specific healthcare circumstances and requirements.
