Raja Shivaji Transcends Cinema to Become Cultural Phenomenon, Says Star Riteish Deshmukh

Since its May 1, 2026 release timed with Maharashtra Day, the historical drama Raja Shivaji has established itself as a significant force at the box office, backed by Jio Studios and Mumbai Film Company. The film's continued momentum has been fueled by genuine audience enthusiasm and grassroots word-of-mouth promotion, according to lead actor and producer Riteish Vilasrao Deshmukh.
The cinematic event has transcended traditional theatrical boundaries, functioning as a multi-generational gathering space. Deshmukh noted the film's remarkable reach across age groups, observing that families are attending together—from grandparents experiencing cinema for the first time alongside their grandchildren, to parents introducing their infants to their inaugural film experience.
"When I see people taking their families, making groups, taking their grandparents, there are a lot of people who have never seen a film, they are taking their grandchildren. New parents, a one-year-old child, and a two-year-old child feel that the first film of their life should be Raja Shivaji, especially the film on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj," Deshmukh shared.
The film's ascent has been amplified through organic social media engagement, with viewers independently creating and sharing theatre reactions, celebratory videos, and personal testimonies online. This audience-driven momentum represents what Deshmukh characterized as the truest validation for filmmakers.
"I think this is the moment when the audience accepts a film. That feeling is very good for the makers because when the audience accepts a film, they themselves start promoting it. Nothing better than that for filmmakers like us," he stated.
Beyond its entertainment value, Deshmukh emphasized the film's educational dimension, particularly for younger audiences seeking knowledge beyond standard textbook coverage. He contended that the cinematic medium provides scope for storytelling that conventional history curricula cannot accommodate.
"I think children should watch the film because we are limited to a few pages of history. I believe that when a story is presented to you on a large screen, they will know that there are a lot of things that are not shown in the history books," Deshmukh explained.
The film's commercial performance has set benchmarks for Marathi cinema, accumulating ₹37 crore during its opening weekend and crossing ₹53.30 crore within the first week of release.
The ensemble cast features Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sachin Khedekar, Boman Irani, Bhagyashree, Fardeen Khan, Jitendra Joshi, Amol Gupte, and Genelia Deshmukh alongside Deshmukh in the lead role. The production, helmed by Jyoti Deshpande and Genelia Deshmukh under their banner Mumbai Film Company, positions the film as a large-scale cinematic exploration of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's life, legacy, and historical significance.
