Telangana Launches Insurance Scheme for Government Workers

Telangana's Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy announced the rollout of an insurance scheme designed to safeguard government employees and their dependents on Thursday. Speaking at an event held at Ravindra Bharathi in Hyderabad, Reddy emphasised that the state has a duty to protect its workforce financially.

The government signed memoranda of understanding with 16 banks to operationalise the insurance programme for state workers. Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, various ministers, bureaucrats, banking officials and representatives from employee unions were present at the launch.

Reddy drew parallels to an earlier insurance initiative extended to Singareni workers, which required no contributions from beneficiaries. He characterised the current scheme as a continuation of this welfare approach, noting that financial security for employees and their families during challenging periods reflects the government's commitment to their wellbeing.

The Chief Minister stressed the significance of ensuring families maintain their financial standing and social dignity following an employee's death through timely financial assistance.

Positioning the scheme within broader governance reforms, Reddy highlighted that the previous administration had burdened Telangana with ₹8.11 lakh crore in debt. He also criticised delayed salary disbursements under the former government, asserting that the current administration now ensures monthly salary payments on the first day.

Despite fiscal constraints, the government has enhanced retirement allowances, with ₹1,000 crore already disbursed as the initial payment toward a ₹6,000 crore commitment for clearing pending retirement dues within 100 days.

The Chief Minister reaffirmed the government's resolve to implement a revised Pay Revision Commission while calling on employees to strengthen state finances by combating tax evasion and enhancing service standards.

Reddy enumerated various welfare initiatives launched by his administration, including the distribution of ration cards, complimentary electricity up to 200 units for qualifying households, reduced-cost LPG supplies, improved schooling infrastructure, the mid-day meal programme and monetary assistance for women's cooperative groups. He noted that 70,000 job vacancies have been filled since the government took office.

The Chief Minister also underscored the government's focus on major developmental undertakings, namely the Musi river restoration initiative, Metro Rail network expansion and the Regional Ring Road project. He called upon government workers to collaborate in realising the vision of transforming Telangana into a one-trillion-dollar economy by 2034.
