NIMS Reaches 2,000 Kidney Transplant Milestone, Emerges as South India's Leader

Hyderabad: Telangana's Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has hailed a significant achievement by Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), which has now completed 2,000 kidney transplant procedures—a development he characterised as a watershed moment for public healthcare delivery in the state.
In remarks released on Friday, Revanth Reddy commended the institution's Department of Urology and its medical personnel for their exceptional work in treating kidney disease patients. The milestone has propelled NIMS to the forefront of kidney transplantation services across South India.
Nationally, the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre in Gujarat maintains the top position for kidney transplants, followed by Christian Medical College in Ludhiana. NIMS now ranks third at the national level, according to the Chief Minister.
The expansion of the transplant programme has been particularly rapid. Between January 2023 and mid-May 2026—a span of three years and four months—NIMS performed 500 kidney transplant surgeries, underlining the pace at which the institution has scaled its services.
A defining feature of this achievement is its accessibility to economically disadvantaged populations. Of the 2,000 recipients, 1,900 underwent surgery entirely at no cost. These patients received treatment through two government-funded mechanisms: the Rajiv Aarogyasri scheme and the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. This approach has ensured that life-saving organ transplantation remains accessible to those without the means to afford private care.
Revanth Reddy attributed the success to the dedication and proficiency of NIMS's medical team, noting that the institution has managed to maintain rigorous standards in organ transplantation while simultaneously broadening the reach of its services to disadvantaged communities. He characterised the accomplishment as evidence of Telangana's strengthening public healthcare infrastructure and the government's commitment to advancing medical services across the state.
