Osmania General Hospital Achieves Breakthrough with Liver Transplant on Toddler

Hyderabad's Osmania General Hospital has marked a significant medical milestone by successfully completing a complex liver transplant on a toddler battling Glycogen Storage Disease.
The procedure involved an 18-month-old weighing just 10 kilograms. The child's father served as the living donor, providing a portion of his own liver for the transplant. The surgery extended beyond 14 hours, reflecting the intricate nature of the operation.
Medical teams faced considerable obstacles during the intervention. The patient's tender age, minimal body weight, and the complications arising from Glycogen Storage Disease created a demanding surgical environment. Despite these hurdles, the medical team navigated the complexities and completed the transplant without incident.
The treatment was provided entirely at no cost to the family through the Aarogyasri scheme, a government healthcare initiative. Hospital leadership emphasized that such advanced liver transplantation procedures remain uncommon within government medical institutions, positioning this surgery as a watershed moment for public healthcare delivery in the region.
Following the operation, the child's condition stabilized, and medical staff reported positive progress in recovery.
State Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha acknowledged the surgical team's accomplishment, commending their commitment and expertise. The minister reaffirmed the government's dedication to bolstering advanced medical services across Telangana's tertiary healthcare network.
