Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon Reality Elite, Bringing Generative AI to Extended Reality Devices

Qualcomm Technologies Inc. unveiled the Snapdragon Reality Elite Platform at the Augmented World Expo, a new chipset architecture intended to advance spatial computing through integrated on-device artificial intelligence and visual clarity across diverse hardware designs. The platform will enable both high-performance all-in-one video-see-through headsets and lighter tethered optical-see-through glasses.

The extended reality market has experienced substantial growth, with more than 60 million devices currently deployed globally and expanding adoption across multiple sectors, according to Ziad Asghar, Senior Vice President and General Manager of XR, Wearables and Personal AI at Qualcomm.

"As XR platforms become increasingly sophisticated and capable, manufacturers and users alike are seeking solutions that combine superior performance with greater computational intelligence and reduced power consumption," Asghar stated. "Snapdragon Reality Elite addresses these requirements through robust on-device AI capabilities, enabling quicker responsiveness, extended operational periods, and richer immersive environments. This reinforces our position in virtual and mixed reality development as we engineer XR processors from the ground up."

AI-Powered Experiences

The Snapdragon Reality Elite delivers computational performance reaching 48 TOPS, sufficient to execute large language and vision models that enable a new generation of generative XR applications. These capabilities include photorealistic digital avatars powered by Gaussian Splatting technology, language model-based intelligent agents, and real-time vision model systems that dynamically generate objects and content within the user's visual field.

The AI integration enhances responsiveness and contextual understanding, facilitating more natural user interactions. The platform also strengthens head and hand motion tracking while supporting see-through functionality, permitting users to interact fluidly with digital elements alongside their physical surroundings.

Performance and Efficiency Gains

The platform delivers substantial improvements across key performance metrics: GPU performance increases by up to 60 percent, CPU performance rises by up to 30 percent, and neural processing unit performance improves by up to 160 percent, providing developers with expanded capabilities for creating complex spatial experiences with enhanced visuals, responsive interactions, and sophisticated mixed reality scenarios.

Visual capabilities extend to 4.4K resolution per eye at 90 frames per second, delivering sharper imagery, fluid motion rendering, and enhanced color accuracy. Video-see-through enhancements reduce processing delays and improve image fidelity, enabling digital content to integrate more naturally with the physical environment. These improvements leverage specialized hardware acceleration through the EVA block, optimizing computer vision computations.

Performance gains are complemented by power efficiency improvements: the platform delivers up to 20 percent extended battery life under equivalent workloads and operates up to 12 degrees Celsius cooler during intensive use. These thermal and power characteristics enable the development of lighter, cooler devices suitable for prolonged wear.

Ecosystem Adoption

The Snapdragon Reality Elite serves as the foundational architecture for the broader XR ecosystem, including Android XR, supporting a wide range of devices from multiple original equipment manufacturers and technology partners. The platform will power XREAL's Project Aura glasses, expected to launch within the year, alongside the forthcoming device from Play for Dream, with additional manufacturers anticipated to adopt the technology.

Chi Xu, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of XREAL, described Project Aura as establishing new standards for optical-see-through XR glasses with AI-enhanced capabilities for professional and daily applications. "Snapdragon Reality Elite provides the computational power, energy efficiency, and sophisticated on-device AI infrastructure essential to realizing our vision for advanced XR," Xu noted. "Whether serving developers requiring substantial performance headroom or consumers anticipating refined, seamless experiences, Snapdragon Reality Elite enables Project Aura to deliver excellence."

Huang Feng, Founder of Play for Dream, expressed enthusiasm for the platform's capabilities. "Snapdragon Reality Elite equips us with the performance and efficiency necessary to elevate our next-generation immersive devices," Feng stated.
