Cyberabad's Lake Adoption Programme Pairs Self-Help Groups with Water Bodies for Conservation and Livelihoods

Hyderabad: In a fresh push to combine environmental stewardship with community economic development, Cyberabad Police have rolled out the Lake Adoption Programme under the broader Praja Palana–Pragati Pranalika initiative. The scheme pairs Self-Help Groups (SHGs) with lakes throughout the Cyberabad jurisdiction to deepen community involvement in water body conservation.
Positioned within the 99 Days Action Plan framework, the programme targets two interconnected goals: bolstering environmental sustainability and creating income-generating pathways for residents in the region.
The implementation strategy involves identifying SHGs across Cyberabad and matching them with specific lakes. This pairing structure enables round-the-clock oversight, active stewardship and safeguarding of the water bodies. The authorities have prioritised improving cleanliness standards, protecting local biodiversity and raising water quality at these sites.
A key component of the initiative centres on fostering community accountability in lake maintenance. Simultaneously, the programme seeks to advance women's economic and environmental participation in conservation activities.
According to officials, SHGs will take on substantive roles in designing, tracking and executing conservation strategies linked to their adopted lakes. Beyond conservation, the programme identifies economic possibilities emerging from lake-centred ecosystems.
Potential income sources include tree planting and nursery operations, fish farming and aquaculture ventures, nature-based tourism, artisanal production, marketing of local goods and other grassroots commercial activities. Authorities view these lakes as dual-purpose assets capable of delivering both environmental and economic returns.
Officials characterise the Lake Adoption Programme as a model that merges conservation imperatives with livelihood creation to advance sustainable development. They contend that this integrated strategy will reinforce the resilience of local populations while securing the future health of Hyderabad's urban water systems.
The initiative commenced on Day 86 of the Praja Palana–Pragati Pranalika action plan across the Cyberabad police commissionerate.
