Telangana's Urban Indiramma Housing Scheme Targets Forward-Looking Design for City Residents

Hyderabad: The Telangana government is advancing its Urban Indiramma housing initiative to deliver homes that combine immediate comfort with long-term viability for economically disadvantaged families across urban centers. Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy outlined how the programme prioritises superior living conditions and enduring development.
The minister explained that the housing scheme aligns with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy's commitment to guaranteeing dignified residential standards while preserving the income-generating activities of the urban poor.
Following Cabinet approval for constructing one lakh houses in the initial phase spanning 24 constituencies under CURE limits, Ponguleti conducted a detailed examination of the project with top-level officials on Friday.
Design Framework Emphasises Four-Decade Perspective
The review involved assessing various Urban Indiramma housing design prototypes, with the minister recommending substantial refinements to the proposals.
He instructed the team to develop housing plans with a 40 to 50-year horizon in mind. He emphasised that infrastructure planning should encompass sewage management, vehicle parking, retail zones and adjustments to contemporary living patterns.
Officials received directions to create building designs reaching up to 10 storeys where geographical and local circumstances allow. The minister stressed that designs must anticipate requirements of future residents and emerging urban needs.
During the meeting, Ponguleti highlighted the importance of incorporating Vaastu principles into the layout of living areas, sleeping quarters, food preparation zones and sanitary facilities. He maintained that each design must enable residents from economically weaker sections to inhabit their homes with dignity and ease.
The minister also mandated the inclusion of parking infrastructure and commercial retail establishments integrated into the residential layouts. He noted that such amenities would enhance quality of life and generate income opportunities for housing occupants.
Ponguleti further directed that each constituency function as an independent implementation zone, ensuring beneficiaries receive housing within their own constituency. This approach would enable residents to maintain proximity to their employment and existing community ties.
Officials have been tasked with finalising the designs following consultations with Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and establishing a structured implementation schedule to accelerate construction efforts.
The minister reiterated that the state's objective is extending housing security to all qualifying economically disadvantaged families in metropolitan areas. He expressed confidence that Telangana's Urban Indiramma model would establish benchmarks applicable across India.
