Telangana Expands Journalist Accreditation Scheme, Extends Transit Benefits

Hyderabad: The state government has significantly broadened its journalist accreditation framework, with Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy unveiling the initiative on Thursday through an event organised by the Information Department.
The expanded scheme aims to bring eligible media professionals across Telangana into the accreditation system, with the ultimate goal of extending healthcare and welfare benefits to the journalism community. The move reflects Chief Minister Revanth Reddy's policy direction, according to the Minister.
Accreditation Eligibility Nearly Doubles
The government undertook a comprehensive review of accreditation practices nationwide before rolling out the revised framework, a process that accounted for the time taken to implement the changes. Under the previous administration, the system had capacity for 32,500 accreditations but issued only 23,352 cards. The restructured system now permits eligibility for more than 46,000 journalists, with approximately 2,800 approvals granted thus far.
Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy stated that Government Orders were modified following feedback from journalist associations, and the administration committed to processing applications from all qualifying candidates without reservation.
District authorities have received instructions to commence accreditation card distribution from May 1. Journalists seeking credentials must submit applications by May 10, which marks the application deadline. All submissions received by this cutoff will be processed accordingly.
Welfare Framework to Follow Accreditation Finalisation
The Minister indicated that the government will develop a comprehensive welfare programme once the total number of accredited journalists is determined. The framework will encompass healthcare provisions and additional support measures.
Addressing concerns among media professionals, Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy clarified that the accreditation process would operate on an ongoing basis, allowing journalists to maintain eligibility even when transitioning between news organisations. He urged media workers to proceed without apprehension about their status.
The state government has set its sights on establishing a national standard for journalist welfare provisions. Consultations with media associations are scheduled to commence shortly, the Minister added.
Bus Pass Validity Extended
In a related announcement, the government extended the validity of bus passes expiring on April 30 by an additional 30 days, with new expiry set for May 31, 2026. The extension was intended to prevent disruption to journalists' commuting arrangements.
During the programme, Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy handed out accreditation cards to multiple journalists. The event was attended by Media Academy Chairman K. Srinivasa Reddy, Information Department Special Commissioner G. Mukunda Reddy, and other departmental representatives.
