Pullela Gopichand Calls for Greater Focus on Physical Literacy Beyond Elite Athletes

Hyderabad — Renowned sports figure and Padma Bhushan recipient Pullela Gopichand has made a strong case for broadening awareness around physical literacy, highlighting its significance beyond the realm of professional athletics.
Speaking at the "Youth and Sports Week–2026" programme held at Gachibowli Indoor Stadium, Gopichand underscored that physical literacy remains a crucial element for people across all demographic groups. He emphasized that the concept should extend well beyond those pursuing competitive sports.
According to Gopichand, physical literacy serves as a foundation for cultivating healthy lifestyles while simultaneously fostering discipline, mental strength, and sporting values among young people. He also noted that sports continues to serve as a significant avenue through which nations gain international recognition, and that a physically healthy population contributes to comprehensive societal development across multiple sectors.
The Telangana Sports Department organized the week-long initiative from May 18 to 23 as part of the broader "Praja Palana Pragathi Pranalika" action plan spanning 99 days. The events were designed with a dual focus on empowering youth and promoting fitness across the state.
Dr A. Sonibala Devi, speaking at the same event, noted that the state government has prioritized strengthening sports facilities throughout Telangana. She highlighted that particular emphasis is being placed on bringing sports opportunities to rural communities.
The Youth and Sports Week programme, according to Dr Devi, aims to enhance public consciousness regarding physical wellness while encouraging broader community engagement in sporting activities. The initiative also seeks to scout for athletic talent across different regions of the state.
The event drew participation from Sports Authority deputy directors Sujatha and Raviteja, along with Gachibowli Stadium administrator Kannam Madhu, coaching staff, and a number of young athletes.
