PhonePe Crosses 50 Million Merchant Milestone, Extends Digital Reach Across India

April 28, 2026

Digital payments platform PhonePe has announced that it has exceeded 50 million merchants on its platform as of April 28, 2026, marking a significant expansion in India's digital economy infrastructure. The achievement reflects the company's strategy of extending its services beyond basic payment processing to encompass a comprehensive range of business solutions.

The platform's merchant network now covers more than 98% of India's postal codes, demonstrating the breadth of its geographical reach. This expansion has been instrumental in bringing small retailers and neighborhood stores into the formal digital economy, moving them away from cash-dependent business models.

PhonePe's growth trajectory has been built on a deliberate strategy to reduce barriers to digital adoption. The company began by deploying QR codes as an accessible entry point for merchants, focusing on cost reduction as a key lever. Through its dedicated Business app, merchants gained the ability to streamline payment management and operations, while gaining access to complementary services such as business loans, smart speakers, and point-of-sale terminals.

The platform's expansion has been underpinned by on-ground sales teams and channel partner networks, coupled with support for regional languages. This combination has enabled PhonePe to establish deep penetration in smaller towns and rural markets across the country.

Yuvraj Singh Shekhawat, Chief Business Officer for Merchant Business at PhonePe, highlighted the significance of the milestone. "Reaching 50 million merchants is a significant milestone in our effort to make financial services more accessible to merchants across India. For many of our partners, the journey began with a simple QR code, but that relationship has since matured. Today, digital payments serve as a gateway to a wider range of formal services, including credit. We remain committed to building the necessary infrastructure to ensure that we can achieve financial inclusion for the smallest of merchants and they can participate in the nation's digital growth," Shekhawat said.

The company's merchant solutions ecosystem includes smart speakers, point-of-sale terminals, and lending products designed to address both payment processing and working capital requirements. These offerings work together to lower friction in digital adoption while supporting merchant business expansion.

The milestone underscores PhonePe's positioning as a critical infrastructure player in India's ongoing transition toward a digitalized commercial landscape, particularly for the vast segment of unorganized retail businesses.
