Fuel Shortage Fears Sweep Across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Amid Panic Buying

Hyderabad witnessed widespread concerns over fuel availability on Monday as petrol pumps across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh grappled with empty reserves and surging demand from anxious motorists.
Multiple fuel stations in Andhra Pradesh ceased operations after exhausting their supplies, with "No Stock" placards becoming a common sight. Lengthy queues developed wherever fuel remained available. The situation mirrored conditions in Telangana, where numerous outlets in and around Hyderabad shut temporarily or displayed similar notices indicating depleted stocks.
Panic Buying Drives the Crisis
State officials clarified that the actual supply situation was far less critical than public perception suggested. Instead, unverified claims circulating on social media platforms alarmed consumers, warning of imminent fuel shortages in subsequent days. This triggered a rush to pumps, with drivers filling their tanks substantially above normal requirements.
The spike in consumer demand proved dramatic, with fuel sales tripling over just two days. This unprecedented surge rapidly exhausted inventories at numerous retail outlets across the region.
Authorities attributed the current shortage to this surge in consumption rather than any genuine supply constraint.
Election-Related Price Speculation
Compounding public anxiety was widespread speculation regarding potential fuel price increases. With assembly elections proceeding in five states and voting nearing its conclusion, various reports suggested the central government might raise petrol and diesel prices following the electoral process. This prompted additional consumers to purchase fuel preemptively.
Unsubstantiated allegations also emerged that oil companies were deliberately restricting supplies in expectation of rate hikes, planning to release existing stock only after prices increased. While no official statements validated these claims, such speculation intensified concerns among motorists.
Commercial Demand Adds Pressure
The situation was further complicated by commercial consumers shifting their diesel purchases to retail outlets. Constrained availability in the commercial supply chain forced this transition, placing additional strain on retail fuel stations already struggling to meet consumer demand.
State officials highlighted that public anxiety itself constituted a significant factor in the crisis. Many consumers purchased substantially more fuel than necessary, further exacerbating pressure on available supplies.
The convergence of panic-driven purchasing patterns, circulating rumours, and elevated overall demand has created the current fuel availability challenges across both states.
