Hyderabad Police Dismantle Online Betting Operation in Begum Bazar

Hyderabad law enforcement has shut down an illegal online betting network operating from the Begum Bazar locality, resulting in the arrest of a 59-year-old operator on May 29.
Goshamahal Police conducted a raid at Narayan Bhavan in Begum Bazar following credible intelligence. The operation led to the apprehension of Venu Gopal Sharma, also known as "Idly Venu," who authorities say orchestrated the betting scheme under the banner "Godavari Associates."
According to investigators, Sharma facilitated wagers on cricket matches and horse racing events by accepting bets via WhatsApp and similar digital communication platforms. He reportedly collected funds through a network of intermediaries, enabling participants to place bets remotely.
Officers recovered a mobile phone and Rs. 3,000 in currency notes from the premises. During interrogation, Sharma allegedly confessed to managing the betting operations and acknowledged deleting WhatsApp conversations to eliminate traces of his involvement.
Police records indicate Sharma has a history of involvement in gambling-related offences. Prior cases against him have been filed at both Goshamahal and Charminar police stations.
The raid was coordinated under the supervision of Golconda Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police G. Chandra Mohan and Goshamahal Division ACP K. Chandra Sekhar Reddy, with support from Goshamahal Police Station personnel.
Following the arrest, Sharma was produced before a magistrate, who ordered his remand in judicial custody pending further investigation.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to combating illegal gambling operations across the city. Police have warned that organisers, facilitators, and participants in unauthorised betting activities will face stringent legal action. The department has also appealed to residents to inform law enforcement of any suspected betting rings in their neighbourhoods.
