Malkajgiri Traffic Police crack down on drunk driving with 227 offenders booked in weekend enforcement

Hyderabad's Malkajgiri Traffic Police have booked 227 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol during a special enforcement operation conducted over the weekend across their jurisdiction.
The offenders were found operating various categories of vehicles, with two-wheelers accounting for 185 of the cases. Three-wheelers numbered 12, four-wheelers 29, and one heavy vehicle operator was also apprehended.
All those charged will face court proceedings as the legal process moves forward.
Blood alcohol concentration testing revealed varying levels of intoxication among those apprehended. The majority—197 individuals—registered BAC readings between 36 and 200 mg/100 ml. A smaller group of 20 offenders showed BAC levels ranging from 201 to 300 mg/100 ml, while 10 individuals recorded BAC measurements exceeding 300 mg/100 ml.
The enforcement drive forms part of broader traffic safety initiatives aimed at reducing impaired driving incidents and enhancing road safety across the city.
Legal consequences for drunk driving
Traffic authorities have underscored that operating a vehicle while intoxicated constitutes a serious criminal violation. Should an impaired driver cause a fatal accident, they face prosecution under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which addresses culpable homicide not amounting to murder. This provision carries potential imprisonment of up to 10 years alongside monetary fines.
In related developments, courts in the Malkajgiri area disposed of 293 drunk driving cases between May 17 and May 23. The sentencing outcomes varied: 11 individuals received jail terms combined with fines, while two offenders were ordered to pay fines and undertake community service work. The remaining 280 cases resulted in monetary penalties alone.
