Kishan Reddy Challenges Rahul Gandhi's Opposition Leadership Record

Hyderabad — Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy has urged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to undertake a critical reassessment of his performance as Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, pointing to the party's disappointing results in recent electoral contests.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Reddy noted that Gandhi has held the Opposition leadership position for two years, during which Congress has struggled at the ballot box across most states. Kerala emerged as the sole exception where the party performed better.

Drawing on electoral statistics, Reddy highlighted the BJP's dominant performance in Assembly elections held after the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. He stated that the saffron party secured 664 Assembly seats in contests across Maharashtra, Haryana, Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Puducherry, substantially outpacing Congress's tally of 171 seats.

The minister attributed the BJP's electoral momentum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's stewardship, asserting that voters have consistently backed the party due to what he characterised as development-oriented governance and public-centric policies.

Reddy pointed to consecutive victories in Assam and Haryana, alongside gains in Bihar, West Bengal and Puducherry, as indicators of strengthening public support for the BJP. He contended that these results demonstrate a clear mandate from voters.

In his criticism of Gandhi's leadership, Reddy alleged that Congress has lost public trust owing to the Congress leader's political stance and messaging. He claimed that Gandhi's statements have failed to align with public sentiment and aspirations.

Reddy further faulted Gandhi for not fulfilling the responsibilities expected of an effective Opposition leader. He invoked a comparison to Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir's promotion following Operation Sindoor in making his critique, though details of this comparison remained unclear. Reddy maintained that the nation requires a more constructive and responsible Opposition than what Congress is currently providing under Gandhi's leadership.
