Karimnagar Bandh Leads to Mass Detentions of BRS Party Members

Law enforcement in Karimnagar intensified operations on Saturday as the BRS orchestrated a city-wide bandh in response to what the party characterized as violent assaults targeting its representatives and facilities.

The shutdown was organized to condemn alleged attacks perpetrated by BJP members against the Karimnagar constituency office of MLA Gangula Kamalakar and the Huzurabad office of MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy.

Authorities moved swiftly to contain the demonstration. Security personnel established a heavy presence at Gangula Kamalakar's home before dawn, preventing the legislator from leaving his residence. He was subsequently taken into custody at LMD Police Station, with police blocking access to his house to keep party supporters away.

Among those taken into custody were former municipal corporation mayor Ravinder Singh and Karimnagar city president Challa Harishankar. Activist Sunke Ravishankar faced a different fate—police intercepted him en route from Burugupalli to Karimnagar and confined him to his home under house arrest.

The bandh found considerable support from the commercial sector, as business owners and traders across multiple localities voluntarily shuttered their establishments. The BRS had appealed to the merchant community to demonstrate solidarity through closures, though BJP representatives countered by urging traders to reject the bandh, contending it lacked relevance to public welfare concerns.

Recognizing the potential for disorder, police deployed reinforcements throughout the district and conducted ongoing arrests of BRS cadres and activists found congregating in public spaces.

Despite the heightened police presence and political friction, substantial portions of Karimnagar maintained relative stability throughout the day.
