New detention facility opens in Telangana to manage immigration violations

Hyderabad City Police has begun operations at a new detention facility in Jogipet, located in Sangareddy district, following directives from the Telangana government to enhance immigration enforcement capacity.
The facility, relocated from its previous location in Basheerbagh, now serves as a dedicated transit and detention unit for foreign nationals. It houses individuals charged with offences including illegal migration, visa violations, human trafficking, and drug-related crimes.
Over the past eight years since 2018, the system has processed 196 foreign detainees. Of these, 184 have been deported after completing the required legal procedures. The centre currently holds 12 individuals awaiting removal, comprising nine men and three women from Sudan, Nigeria, Uganda, and Cameroon.
The deportation process involves coordination with multiple central government agencies. Before any removal takes place, authorities must obtain clearances from both the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs. Transfers are conducted either by air or through designated international border crossings, with detainees under police escort.
Senior law enforcement officials oversaw the establishment of the Jogipet facility, ensuring adequate infrastructure and operational standards. The relocation is intended to strengthen immigration enforcement and improve detention procedures across the state.
The Telangana government has also approved plans for a permanent transit facility at Cherlapally Prison. This development aims to establish a long-term solution for managing foreign nationals in custody while maintaining legal compliance and security standards.
