JioHotstar Debuts Commerce-Driven Advertising Using Purchase Intent Signals

April 26, 2026

JioHotstar has unveiled a novel advertising approach centred on commerce signals, enabling brands to identify audiences with heightened accuracy by moving beyond conventional demographic targeting methods. The new offering harnesses real purchase intent data to connect advertisers with consumers already inclined towards specific product categories, fundamentally reshaping how brands engage viewers across the platform's streaming services.

This capability represents a shift from awareness-focused campaigns towards action-oriented engagement. Viewers can seamlessly transition from watching content to exploring products through integrated call-to-action elements embedded within the viewing experience. The system enables a complete journey—discovery, engagement, and conversion—within a single session, while advertisers receive comprehensive reporting across the entire sales funnel with improved transparency and measurability.

The feature makes its debut during the cricket season, when JioHotstar attracts some of its largest and most engaged audiences. Instamart has partnered as the inaugural advertiser on the platform, marking the beginning of what the company describes as a new era of data-informed brand partnerships.

The technology operates using privacy-compliant, aggregated insights derived from purchase behaviour patterns. Rather than relying solely on viewing habits, the system identifies which consumers are most likely to act on product opportunities, allowing brands to time their messaging when audiences are most receptive.

"Signal-led advertising demonstrates our commitment to delivering value for everyone in our ecosystem—consumers, brands, and advertisers," said Anup Govindan, Head of Sports Sales at JioStar. "This approach goes beyond understanding what people watch to predicting what they'll do next. We're enabling brands to connect with audiences during moments when they're genuinely interested. During major events like the TATA IPL, advertisers can reach the right people at precisely the right moment, making campaigns more meaningful and results-driven."

Himavant Kurnala, Senior Vice President of Product at Instamart, added: "We're constantly working to close the distance between when consumers discover products and when they decide to purchase. Through this partnership with JioHotstar, we're transforming high-intent moments into seamless transactions. By combining premium entertainment with quick commerce convenience, we're creating a frictionless shopping experience for millions of Indian households."

JioHotstar continues to expand its advertising toolkit beyond this new capability. Existing offerings like Self-Serve Ads and Shop The Look complement signal-led advertising, enabling brands to operate at scale while maintaining precision, relevance, and strategic purpose in their audience engagement.
