Instamart's 'Mummaby' Campaign Ditches Sentimentality for Satirical Comedy with Farah Khan

India's quick commerce leader Instamart has chosen an unconventional route for its Mother's Day messaging, steering away from the emotional territory that typically dominates the category. The brand's campaign, titled 'Mummaby', replaces conventional sentimentality with sharp humour, bringing together heavy metal music, rap, and the distinctive comedic sensibility of filmmaker Farah Khan to present a fresher perspective on motherhood.
The campaign's central concept unfolds within an audition setting. A crowded hallway outside an audition space hosts contestants preparing to participate in an unusual competition. An enthusiastic announcer frames the premise to the assembled crowd: mothers spend their entire lives singing lullabies to their children, so perhaps it's time for someone to reciprocate. The dramatic announcement—"Mummaby sunaayenge!"—signals the theatrical chaos to follow.
Inside the judging area, Farah Khan presides over a panel that includes two visibly exhausted mothers. The performances that ensue grow progressively more outlandish. Traditional lullabies transform into heavy metal screams, energetic bhangra tracks, hip-hop verses, and electronic remixes. Each performer attempts with increasing intensity to lull the judges into restfulness, yet the cumulative effect only amplifies their visible fatigue and irritation.
Khan's performance as a judge proves pivotal to the film's impact. Her expressions—exasperated looks, hand-to-face gestures, and sardonic commentary—maintain authenticity as the spectacle escalates. One performance reaches its comedic peak when a contestant confuses emotional depletion with actual sleep. Khan's natural fit for this role stems from her three decades in cinema, during which she has juggled directing major films while raising triplets. This lived experience grounds the satire in recognizable reality.
The campaign's turning point arrives with a strategic shift in messaging. Rather than encouraging elaborate tributes to mothers, it advocates for tangible assistance. The core idea is straightforward: meaningful action surpasses ceremonial appreciation. This could mean shouldering household responsibilities or quickly procuring wellness items through Instamart's platform.
Mayur Hola, Brand Head at Swiggy, elaborated on the campaign's philosophy: "Mother's Day typically emphasises gratitude, but we chose to highlight something more fundamental. Mothers operate perpetually, with their children's needs constantly occupying their thoughts and attention. 'Mummaby' employs comedy to break through noise and communicate authentically. While grand displays have merit, genuine support comes through modest, deliberate gestures—much like Instamart's availability precisely when required."
Khan shared her perspective on the collaboration: "I've encountered countless theatrical presentations, so translating that energy into 'Mummaby' proved genuinely enjoyable. What resonated most was its authenticity. Mothers don't require elaborate productions. They require rest and relief. Whether through children's involvement or Instamart's assistance, success means easing the burden on mothers."
The campaign simultaneously highlights Instamart's Mother's Day inventory expansion, featuring self-care products and luxury chocolate selections.
